Hamell paints scenes inspired by the 'underground' and 'disenfranchised' of our society. Ed uses bold and bright colors in his paintings which contrast the darker subject matter, championing the underclass, drawing you into the characters he depicts, endearing you to them and sparking emotions one might not anticipate.Hamell is also available for specific painting commissions. I had a little 'project' studio in my basement. A little Roland digital 8-track, a sampler, a drum machine, bass, electric guitar, few mics plus all my acoustic instruments. As usual, when working on a record, I had done endless hours of demos for Tough Love which was to be my first official release on Ani DiFranco's Righteous Babe Records. There was a lot of optimism anticipating that record, they had invested in it heavily, I had gone to England to record with the great John Leckie, I had a really good agent domestically for the first time, I had management that was breathing down my neck and offering unwanted creative advice...it was turning out to be a pain in the ass despite the fact that I was proud of the record. I needed to blow off a creative project quick, something unhindered by other chefs dabbling in the soup. There had always been an area in the live show with a spoken word piece, some would argue there's one on every album, 'Piccolo Joe' on Big As Life, 'The Vines' on Chord....etc, and as you may have guessed I have a special place in my heart for the written/spoken word. I'd accumulated enough to put together an album so I blew it off in a week, it was nothing but fun and I pressed it up and sold 3,000 copies fast. It's still one of my favorites. Released it simultaneously with Tough Love.
