All of the images below, and many you see as the accompanying artwork on the digital releases, are Hamell paintings. These vary in size and price, but are all acrylic on canvas. Hamell paints scenes inspired by the 'underground' and 'disenfranchised' of our society. When I lived in Albany for a couple years I got a steady Wednesday night playing at a place called The Halfmoon Cafe. A tiny joint where they would eat, I would play, sometimes they would pay attention, I drew a loyal following of about 7 people and the stragglers made up another 15 or so, pass the hat and I crafted the basics that were to become the Hamell on Trial show. My buddy Mike Eck moved to Austin before me and asked that I send him a live recording of my weekly show. I had recently purchased a DAT recorder and a good mic but try as I might I never was able to capture something that I thought was truly representative of my show. One night, a little before Christmas, I set up the tiny recording operation in the living room of my even tinier Albany apartment and recorded the show as a letter. When I was done I realized this was the best demo I had ever done and released it as a 500 run, cassette only recording. Never in a million years would I have anticipated that this little snip from that cassette release would end up on my first major label deal.
