4) DRUNK DIAL ME
I had met Matt LaBozza cuz he managed this cool guitar shop in Peekskill, Division Street Guitars, where I got repairs and stuff and he mentioned that he did some recording but he certainly never pitched me on his studio located directly above the shop. ( Handy, right?) It's smart to be cautious these days. I think the initial thing was, 'Hey I got this old Roland digital 8 track, could I dump it onto Pro-Tools?' He was like, 'Yeah. Sure. Whatever.' So the first day he took my tracks for Hail My Rage and turned it into what yer hearing now. I was flabbergasted. You can't hear what I brought into him. AND YER NEVER GONNA!! Hahaha. But it sure as hell didn't sound like that. But the genuine emotion was there I guess. Never a prob. And that day a partnership was formed. In MY mind. Probably not in his. As I said ...cautious. Anyway, I learned a lot of things over the two years of recording. Matt was extremely generous with his engineering and production knowledge. After I'd play him the tracks I'd tell him what I heard in my head, articulating such precise musical phrases as, 'I want this part to sound like they are going under a bridge where it is raining tiny little stars' (actual quote). Then he'd nod and do it. This song was a midway point in the production of the album. I felt like it was my midterm. Had a lot of fun with this, with my drum machine and little box of guitar effects. Basically it was waking up and thinking, 'How can I make some amusing fucked up shit today?' VOILA! ( Speaking of guitar effects shout out to Josh and the fine folk at JHS pedals for putting out outstanding YouTube videos and helping me negotiate stress during those weird Kafka like times. Idk how you guyz wind down after a hard day of gaslighting but musical gear shows are like opium sedating the blood pressure for me. Idk JHS personally, and I don't own any of their pedals and in light of my potty mouth and anarchistic politics I'm sure they don't wanna be associated with me but nonetheless, thanx. )
The song of course is based on real life experience. No shit huh? There was a woman. I might go into detail a bit about her later, as she does play a significant role in this record,
this time capsule, if you will, of the Trump years, the Pandemic, the break up with this young lady, my son's graduating from high school. The woman, let us call her 'Jelly' as autocorrect had christened her, would occasionally consume a few cocktails and drunk dial me. This was pretty great when we were together, phone sex being what it is. John Waters says he was glad he was raised Catholic cuz sex will always be dirty. I couldn't agree more. Then she would drunk dial even after we split. Man I loved and missed that woman. You pick up the phone. Then it stopped altogether. And then she blocked me.
